HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION GUIDELINES
Please read and follow all instructions carefully

First Waughtown Baptist Church celebrates achievement during Graduates Day, celebrated on the third Sunday in May each year. A major part of the celebration includes awarding two scholarships of $1,500.00 each to deserving high school
graduating seniors who are members of the church. One of these scholarships is named in memory of our

Pastor Emeritus Rev. E. L. Grant and the other in memory of Sister Carrie Bitting, one who labored many years in the Music Education Ministry. To be considered for the Grant and Bitting scholarships, applicants MUST --

​

  • be active members of First Waughtown Baptist Church for at least one year.

  • have an unweighted grade point average of 3.0 or above.

  • be involved in extracurricular, church, and/or community activities within the last three years.

  • have been accepted to an institution of higher learning (university, college, technical school/college, community college, etc.).

Submit the Following:

  • a recommendation from two (2) high school teachers

  • official transcript of high school grades

  • copy of " Letter of Acceptance" from the school you plan to attend

  • your written essay indicating why you should be selected for the scholarship

ALL required information must be submitted online no later than April 12, 2026

Scholarship recipients will be announced during the Graduates Day Service. If more than two applicants present comparable qualifications, the Scholarship Committee may divide scholarship funds among such applicants as determined by committee vote. If no applicants qualify, the scholarships will not be awarded.

Velma J. Lindsay Memorial Award

Beginning in 2026, First Waughtown will award a third scholarship, the Velma J. Lindsay Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of Sister Lindsay who served as church clerk and a Trustee, along with being a member of the Music Ministry, Planning Committee, and the inaugural Scholarship/College Day Committee. This award offers $2,000 in scholarship support to a high school graduate based on the following criteria.  Applicants MUST

  • be a member of First Waughtown Baptist Church for at least a year

  • have an unweighted grade point average of at least 3.5.

​

Submit the Following:

  • a recommendation from two (2) high school teachers or counselors addressing your academic and co-curricular achievements, along with your personal demeanor

  • official transcript of high school grades

  • copy of "Letter of Acceptance" from the school you plan to attend

  • a personal essay stating your postsecondary plans and aspirations, and other information that reflects your potential for successful matriculation.

ALL required information must be submitted online no later than April 12, 2026
